Grasping the bird's tail
-With exception of Step (1),(3)
(5) when both arms have to move
slightly to follow the direction
of the forearms, both arms do not
change their positions against
the body during the whole process
of Grasping the Bird's Tail. Only
the forearms follow the turning
of the waist to rotate. Reducing
the movement of the arms as much
as possible is an important
feature of the Square Form. When
this is becoming a custom, it
will reduce the bad habit of
using the rough force of the arms
and can achieve the result of
agileness when doing push-hand
-The arms being able to follow
the waist and hip to turn swiftly
and not to move pointlessly is
also one of the essentials in the
application of the Angular Form
to quickly neutralize incoming
attack during sparring. Keeping
the body upright and good at
using the turning of the waist
and hip to maintain the balance
of a single leg stance are the
common key requirements of all

Grasping the bird' s tail 01
-With the spine as axis and the upper body in upright position, turn with the waist to the right till the right forearm
pointing west near the right side of the body. The right elbow is slight moving downward following the direction of the
forearm. At the same time, turn the right forearm making the right palm from facing left to facing down.
-Keep the left elbow still. With the left forearm as axis turn the left palm from facing right to facing up. The left-hand
fingers remain touching the center part of the right hand wrist. Leave a fist of distance between the arms and the body.
-Play attention that when turning the body, keep both legs stable. The upper body should not lean forward or

-Keep both elbows still. With the spine as axis and the upper body in upright position, turn the waist to the left till the
left forearm pointing west. Both elbows do not make any move and both feet remain stable.
-In turning the waist, rotate the left forearm making the left palm from facing up to facing down. Turn the right forearm
at the same time, making the right palm from facing down to facing up. The left hand fingers are still slightly placed
upon the middle of the right hand wrist.
-The upper body should not lean forward or backward when it makes the turn through the waist.

-The upper body remain still. By stretching the left leg, connect point Hd-S-Hp-K-Hl into a straight line. At the same
time, the right leg bend forward forming a bow step. Coordinate the movement of both legs and ensure that the hip
joints (Hp) are at the same height during the entire process. Also play attention that the front of the right knee is not
beyond the right toes. The proper position is having the feeling that the center of gravity is falling to the later part of
the right foot.
-When the left leg is finally strengthen, with the heel as the supporting point and the line of Hp and A as axis , turn the
left foot inward making both feet in parallel steps.
By moving the left elbow slightly upward along the direction of the left forearm, the right hand fingers are at nose level.

-Keeping both legs steady, turn right by the waist and move the right forearm to face west. When making the turn,
keep both hands in the same height. By using the right forearm as axis, rotate the right palm from facing up to facing
own .Also with the left forearm as axis , rotate the left palm from facing down to facing up. The left hand fingers are still
placed in the middle of the right hand wrist.
-Do take note that when making the turn, the left knee should not follow to move to the right. Instead, the left knee can
somewhat having the sense of turning left. This will facilitate the opening of the hip. Compiling convex of the lower
back and tighten of the buttock, it will make the area between the hip and the waist vigorously stable.

-With coordination and control, stretch the bended right leg and bend the straightened left leg. Keep the hip joints at
the same height during this whole process. At the beginning, the center of gravity of the body is moving backward by
stretching the right leg with the right foot stepping on the ground. When the right leg is straighten, the center of the
gravity of the body is rest on the left heel and the left side of the left foot. This is made possible by combining the
vigor of contracting the muscle of the left leg, convex the lower back, tightening the buttock and withdrawing both hip
joints backward. And the left foot toes grasp the ground to maintain the whole balance.
-The right toes point up as much as possible. Keep both legs balance with both knees at the same height without
divergence between front and behind. Same as the Commencement Form, keep the knees in hip’s width apart by
opening the hip .
- When the body weight is supported solely by the rear leg in a bended position, opening the hip, tighten the buttock
and convex the lower back are the crucial points to maintain balance. Even though the right leg does not provide any
weight support, it should have the sense of taking root to the ground. At this time, keep the upper spine straight.
Both hands follow the right elbow moving slightly downward along the direction of the right forearm. The final posture
is essentially the same as the starting posture of Grasping the Bird’s Tail 01.
